gypsy’s story

Gypsy has always been small, but her spirit has never been.

She’s the kind of dog who turns heads everywhere she goes… with her tiny ponytail, snaggletooth smile, and personality that somehow manages to fill every room. To those who know her best, she’s more than a pet. She’s family. She’s a best friend. She’s a little soul wrapped in fur.

In March of 2025, Gypsy was diagnosed with a subcutaneous mast cell tumor.

Like so many families who hear the word cancer, everything changed overnight. The fear, the uncertainty, the endless questions about what comes next.

Shortly after her diagnosis, one of Gypsy’s oncologists shared something that would stay with us throughout her journey. sHe explained that her cancer would never be cured. Instead, every treatment decision we made would be about giving us as many bonus days with her as possible.

And that’s exactly what we chose to fight for.

Gypsy underwent surgery to remove the tumor, and for a brief moment it looked like we had beaten it. But within weeks, the cancer returned aggressively. What followed was a whirlwind of emergency visits, medications, and difficult decisions.

Through it all, Gypsy never stopped being Gypsy.

She continued wagging her tail. She continued greeting people with joy. She continued soaking up every moment of sunshine like nothing in the world could dim her spirit.

Through the care of an incredible veterinary oncology team at Texas A&m university, Gypsy has been able to receive a variety of treatments designed to slow the cancer and give her the best quality of life possible. From surgery and medications to radiation and supportive therapies, every step of her care has been focused on the same goal: more time together.

More strolls.
More sunny days.
More snuggles.
More memories we never expected to have.

And the most incredible part?

Gypsy is still here.

She continues to greet each day with the same joy, stubborn spirit, and sunshine-loving personality that has always made her so special. Her journey is still unfolding, and every extra day we get with her reminds us exactly why those bonus days matter so much.

Along the way, we also realized how many families face this same heartbreaking diagnosis with their dogs. Veterinary oncology has advanced tremendously, and there are often treatments that can extend a dog’s life and preserve their quality of life. But those treatments can also come with overwhelming financial challenges, forcing many families to make impossible decisions.

Gypsy’s journey opened our eyes to how many dogs could benefit from just a little more help and a little more time.

That realization became the beginning of The Bonus Days Foundation.

Inspired by Gypsy’s strength and spirit, our mission is to help dogs battling cancer receive the care that can give them more time with the people who love them most. More walks. More cuddles. More sunshine-filled afternoons.

More bonus days.
